Silver Spring has no shortage of great spots to grab a drink after work, and over the years, I’ve gotten to know quite a few of them. Whether you’re looking for a cozy dive bar, a chic seafood spot, or a place with a solid margarita and some good people-watching, this list covers it all. These are my personal go-to happy hour picks—places I’ve visited (more than once) and genuinely enjoy. Each has its own vibe, but they all offer that little exhale at the end of a long day.
🥃 Quarry House Tavern
I’ve been going to Quarry House for years, and when it reopened after the fire—restored to its original dive bar glory—I was thrilled. It looked exactly the same, in the best way. This basement-level bar is a true Silver Spring mainstay with a fun, speakeasy vibe. It’s dark, cozy, and unpretentious, with a killer whiskey list, great beer selection, and the kind of atmosphere that makes it easy to lose track of time. The happy hour is solid, the tater tots are a must, and it’s one of those places that just feels like home.
🍀 McGinty’s Public House
McGinty’s Public House is a classic Irish pub right in the heart of downtown Silver Spring. It has that familiar, casual, and welcoming vibe you’d expect from a true Irish spot—dark wood, cozy booths, and friendly bartenders. It’s the kind of place where you can come as you are and feel right at home. The menu goes beyond typical pub fare: the chef clearly puts thought and care into every dish. Whether you’re in the mood for something hearty or trying to stick to healthier choices (like I usually am), McGinty’s has something for you. It’s a reliable, comfortable favorite with food that’s genuinely good.
McGinty’s has happy hour specials every Monday – Friday 4-7pm.
🍺 Silver Branch Brewing Company
Silver Branch Brewing Company is a lively and welcoming brewery in downtown Silver Spring, just steps from the Metro. With a spacious taproom and a laid-back outdoor biergarten, it’s the perfect spot to relax after work or meet up with friends. They offer a wide variety of craft beers, inspired by both European and American traditions, so there’s always something worth trying. The addition of their artisan pizza kitchen makes it even better for happy hour or a casual night out. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and always fun.
🦞 All Set Restaurant & Bar
All Set Restaurant & Bar is a Black- and woman-owned gem in downtown Silver Spring. This modern New England-inspired restaurant offers a warm, coastal vibe with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients and thoughtful presentation. The menu blends classic seafood dishes with Southern-style BBQ influences, and includes a variety of vegan and vegetarian options. All Set is also known for its inclusive atmosphere, featuring wheelchair accessibility and Braille menus. Whether you’re stopping in for happy hour, brunch, or a casual dinner, it’s a welcoming space that combines great food with community spirit.
☕ Java Nation
Java Nation is a cool, flexible space in downtown Silver Spring that works whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or settling in for drinks and dinner. One side is a casual café with coffee, pastries, and quick bites; the other side is more of a restobar with a full menu, cocktails, and often live music. The vibe is stylish but comfortable—good for a casual meetup or winding down at the end of the day. Happy hour runs from 4 to 6:30 PM, Monday through Saturday, with a nice mix of drink and food specials.
🍻 Third Hill Brewing Co.
Third Hill is a newer brewery in downtown Silver Spring, but it already feels like part of the community. The vibe is super friendly and low-key, with a great selection of beers and a nice open space to hang out. One of the best things about it? Their trivia nights. They host a fun and lively trivia every Thursday, and it’s always a good time whether you’re a hardcore trivia nerd or just there for the beer and laughs. It’s the kind of place that makes it easy to relax and stay a while.
🥂 J. Hollinger’s Waterman’s Chophouse
J. Hollinger’s is a polished but comfortable spot right in downtown Silver Spring. It’s a great choice when you’re in the mood for something a little more upscale without feeling stuffy. The bar has a nice vibe, and the happy hour—especially the $1 oysters—is worth checking out. Whether you’re grabbing a drink or staying for a full meal, it’s a solid pick for a date night or a nicer evening out.
I hope this list gives you some inspiration to get out and enjoy happy hour around Silver Spring. These spots have been favorites of mine over the years, and each one brings something a little different to the table. Have fun, try something new, and support these great local venues.
